Age is Not an Obstacle to Motherhood

Pregnancy after 40 — and even after 50 — is no longer an exception. With the support of modern medicine and Southeastern Fertility Solutions (SFS), women of advanced age can have a child with safety, dignity, and proper guidance.

Legal Framework in Greece

In Greece, under Law 4958/2022, in vitro fertilization (IVF) is permitted for women aged 50 to 54, following approval from the National Authority of Medically Assisted Reproduction (EAIYA). The license is granted after medical evaluation and is valid for one year.

Required Medical Examinations

  • Καρδιολογική εκτίμηση
  • Cardiology assessment
  • Ultrasound of uterus/ovaries
  • Hematological and biochemical testing
  • Hormonal testing
  • Mammography & Pap smear
  • Psychological evaluation (where required)

Medical Monitoring & Risks

Pregnancy at an advanced age is considered high-risk and requires:

  • More frequent ultrasounds and Doppler scans
  • Prenatal tests such as NIPT
  • Monitoring by a cardiologist and internist
  • Often, a planned cesarean section

EAIYA Statistics (2023–2024)

  • 552 embryo transfers in women aged 50–54 in 2023
  • 106 births from this group in 2024

The baby take-home rate is approximately 20.3%, a particularly encouraging indication of IVF effectiveness in this age group.
