The Third Trimester: The Final Stretch
You’ve entered the final phase of your pregnancy! While many second trimester symptoms may continue, you might also notice some new changes as your body prepares for childbirth.
During this time, it’s common to experience:
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, caused by your growing baby pressing on your diaphragm
- Increased need to use the bathroom, as the baby puts pressure on your pelvis
- Heartburn—a burning sensation in your upper abdomen
- Swelling in your ankles, fingers, and face
(If swelling appears suddenly, becomes severe, or is accompanied by rapid weight gain, contact your doctor immediately, as this may indicate preeclampsia.) - Hemorrhoids
- Breast tenderness, sometimes with a watery discharge called colostrum
- A protruding belly button
- Sleep difficulties
- A strong feeling that your baby has moved lower in your abdomen
- Contractions, which may be either false (Braxton Hicks) or true labor signs
As your due date approaches, your cervix will begin to thin and soften—a process called cervical ripening. This is a natural part of preparing your body for labor, helping the cervix dilate during childbirth. Your doctor will monitor this progress through vaginal exams as you get closer to delivery. The countdown has officially begun—your baby will be here soon!
